Route History

Mount Meru, a dormant stratovolcano formed over 500,000 years ago, stands at 4,566m as Tanzania’s second-highest peak. A massive eruption 250,000 years ago reshaped its eastern flank, creating a dramatic crater. Revered by local Meru and Arusha communities, it holds deep spiritual significance.

The first recorded summit was in 1904 by German explorer Fritz Jaeger, guided by locals through treacherous ridges. The 4-day route is now a popular choice for climbers seeking a balanced pace with high success rates.

Why the 4-Day Route?

The 4-day Mount Meru trek offers a relaxed pace with an extra night for acclimatization, boosting the summit success rate to 92%. Ideal for most climbers, it combines diverse ecosystems, wildlife sightings, and stunning views, making it a perfect blend of challenge and comfort.

Pro Tip

The 4-day itinerary includes an extra night at Miriakamba Hut after the summit, allowing for a more relaxed descent and better recovery, ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
