The complete Shira Route experience with excellent acclimatization
The Shira Route is one of the older routes on Kilimanjaro, originally used by early explorers and climbers. It approaches the mountain from the west, beginning at a higher elevation than most other routes. This route shares the same trailhead as the Lemosho Route but follows a different path across the Shira Plateau.
The Shira Route was the original path up Kilimanjaro's western side before the Lemosho Route was developed as an improved alternative. While less popular today, it remains an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a more remote experience with spectacular views.
What makes the Shira Route special is its immediate immersion into high-altitude trekking. Starting at 3,600 meters, you bypass the forest zone and begin on the Shira Plateau, offering expansive views from day one. The route provides excellent acclimatization as it crosses the plateau before joining the Machame Route near Lava Tower.
The Shira Route's high starting elevation makes proper acclimatization crucial. We strongly recommend spending an extra night in Moshi before your trek to help adjust to the altitude. The 7-day itinerary includes strategic acclimatization hikes to maximize your chances of summit success.
